Cathy Miller, Chair of the Board

Cathy is an experienced CEO with over 27 years’ experience at a leadership level in both the health and disability sector. CEO roles have included Wakefield Private Hospital, Southern Health and Minda Incorporated.  She has a focus on building effective teams to improve culture, values, employs driven people and is customer focussed. As an experienced and successful Board Director with over 24 years governance experience, she is well equipped to lead strategy, set vision, drive growth and exceed customer’s expectations.

Cathy is always seeking to provide quality, effective, efficient services to customers during her career.

She has been a Director, National Disability Service and Australian Private Hospital Association and is a Director, Business SA, Director and Chair – Stirling Hospital, Trustee Pulteney Grammar Foundation and a Director of Workability International, focussing on employment of people with disability throughout the world.

Cathy was awarded Telstra SA Business Woman of the Year (2003).

Hugh Steele, Deputy Chair of the Board

Hugh was admitted to practice in December 1985 after graduating from the University of Adelaide and spent fifteen years practising in Tanunda in the Barossa Valley prior to shifting to Mount Barker and joining Mead Robson Steele in August 2001, becoming a partner shortly thereafter.

Hugh specializes in matrimonial/de facto property settlement matters, commercial and leasing matters, business sales and purchases, real estate conveyancing, Wills and estate matters and succession planning and sundry civil litigation.

Hugh has also practiced in areas of planning, advising both Councils and applicants, the drafting of various Council By-Laws and also in the area of collection of rates for various Councils including auction sales for non payment of rates and the subsequent conveyancing.

Hugh has been involved with Apex since 1990 and is a Senior Active member of the Mount Barker Apex Club.

Lisa Hickey, Chair of the Finance Committee

Lisa Hickey is a Director in Accounting & Business Advisory at Hood Sweeney, and the accounting leader of the Health team. She also serves on the Hood Sweeney Board.

Prior to Hood Sweeney, Lisa was a partner at Shearer & Elliss and a manager at BDO. With almost three decades of experience, which includes international commerce, Lisa provides taxation and structure advice, asset protection, business management and planning to clients including small family businesses and high-net-worth individuals but specialising mainly in the Health industry.

She said she particularly loves helping professionals and businesses in the Health sector because while they’re looking after others’ health, she can look after their financial health.

Outside of work, she is committed to her young adult daughter and a plethora of animals. Lisa is a volunteer of Purrfect Paws Rescue.

Simon Dawe

A Pharmacist for 25 years with a strong belief in patient personalised care. As a business owner, Simon has been a partner and manager in the successful Green Dispensary Group of Pharmacies for the past 20 years, currently operating in Stirling, Erindale, Blackwood and St Peters.

He has a strong background in small business management having been involved with the operation of twelve pharmacies during his time with the Green Dispensary Group of Pharmacies. This includes responsibilities for HR, financial management, and marketing along with meeting important requirements of government regulatory bodies.

He is a current member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and also serves on the Pharmacy Guild of South Australia’s branch committee. He has strong connections with the Stirling community having owned businesses and lived in the area for over 40 years.

Tony Harrison

Tony Harrison commenced his career in policing, undertaking a variety of roles and functions; being appointed to a Police Assistant Commissioner in 2005.  He was responsible for a number of national policing reform strategies and worked with senior police from law enforcement agencies around the world in specialist roles.

In 2012, he was appointed as the State’s Director General for Community Safety and in 2013 appointed by the Government as the Chief Executive for the Department of Education and Child Protection. Amongst other reforms he Chaired the development of the National Aboriginal and Torres Straight Island Education Strategy.

In 2016, he was appointed the Chief Executive of the Human Services Department responsible for South Australia’s transition to the National Disability Insurance Scheme involving some 30,000 citizens.  He was responsible for the delivery of allied health care services, aged care and disability services.  He was also the Chairman of Minda Incorporated, for the period of 2010-2016, the largest disability provider in South Australia.

In April 2021, he took on the Chief Executive position for the City of Marion and continues as a non-executive board member.

Astrid Kuivasaari

Astrid is an experienced Board Director and Executive with particular expertise in Corporate Governance, Finance, Operations and Strategy. Holding qualifications in economics, accounting and business, and with a focus on the not for profit sector, she has held executive level roles within aged care, social services and health. Astrid has served on numerous not for profit boards.

Andy Simpson

Dr Andy Simpson is an independent consultant ophthalmologist with a special interest in cataract surgery and retinal disease (both medical and surgical).

Having completed medical school and ophthalmology training in the UK, he came to South Australia to complete a second year of specialist training, called a Fellowship, in the area of vitreoretinal surgery.

Andy operates regularly at Stirling Hospital and consults from his Hills based rooms in Mount Barker. He also regularly visits Alice Springs and the APY Lands to provide eye healthcare.

In his spare time he enjoys running; and he also has his private pilots licence and enjoys flying

Rod Smith

Rod is a consulting engineer and project manager with experience in a wide range of fields, including automotive engineering, agricultural robotics, artificial intelligence, mining and defence, as well as healthcare.

His 25-year healthcare experience includes roles ranging from Vice President of a US-based health insurance software company, CEO of a healthcare risk analysis company, to Project Manager and Commercial Manager of a large hospital construction project.

Rod has three grown-up children, two of whom are healthcare professionals.  The other one is a barrister.
